An Interview with Shantael Sleight, Abstract Floral Painter

Let's take some time to get to know Shantael Sleight, a Canadian abstract floral painter at h squared gallery.

Where or how do you look for inspiration?
On my walks around Thetis Lake (nature). Out in coffee shops. Outside.

Take us through the part of your artistic process that you love the most.
The beginnings - Gathering ideas and inspiration on my walks and taking photos, then beginning a new painting using the colours, shapes and mood from some images (pasted on my wall) to create a composition.

Why is it important for you to paint/build/create?
To connect into the mystery of my/our humanity. When I get to be out in nature and then paint / create in the studio, I tap into a wellspring of connection with something much bigger. And then, I get to share it. That all feels very important.

Name something you've learned as an artist that was unexpected.
How much it seeps and weaves into every aspect of my life.

What is your ideal Sunday morning?
A little sleep in, ease into the morning with 1.2 or even 3 cups of coffee, a long walk in the trees and a few hours making pottery or painting in the studio.

What genre, band, artist, or podcast do you like to listen to when you work?
I love listening to indie folk music, a dharma talk and/or one of these great podcasts: House Calls with Dr.Vivek Murthy, Art Juice, Raising Good Humans, The Art Career.
