Charred ash. Reclaimed colour.
Ashen is turned from ash into a wide, shallow bowl. A rounded base flows into gently flared sides and a thin rim.
The exterior has been charred (the traditonal Janpanese technique of yakisugi) and brushed by hand, leaving a black surface with the growth rings still clearly visible. The interior is left natural, showing the warm colour and open grain of the ash.
An off-centre band of recycled skateboard maple runs through the bowl and continues down the exterior. Narrow layers of blue, green, black and natural maple stand out against both the pale interior and charred surface.
Built to last. Made to age beautifully.
The process of making the recycled skateboard inlay material takes days.Then I take that material and laminate it with a variety of woods. That also takes another day. At this point,I have material I can use for making bowls. The price is higher because the process takes a very long time. The yakisugi burning also takes extra time. This bowl kinda has it all.) This ash is from a tree that was pushed over to make way for a development in a forest. It was harvested by a collector. Otherwise it would have just been thrown in a slash pile to burn. Maybe that’s why I decided to burn it?
