BLACKBURL WORKS

about brad filgate of blackburl works

From my Blackburl Works studio, I create one-of-one functional art that sits between sculpture, functional design, and traditional woodcraft. I want each piece to feel natural—as though its shape, material, and colour were always meant to belong together. I’m drawn to wood and materials with a story, revealed through expressive figure, natural irregularities, or evidence of previous use. Working with carefully selected hardwoods, burls, repurposed timber, and reclaimed materials, I let grain, weight, and character guide the final form rather than beginning with an exact pattern. Every piece is shaped and finished by hand. Japanese and Scandinavian design influence my focus on simplicity, natural materials, and purposeful form, while the mountain landscape around me shapes how I think about proportion and balance. Maple recycled from discarded skateboards introduces subtle colour while retaining a trace of its former life. Alongside my studio practice, I am a career firefighter. That work has given me a strong respect for purpose, reliability, and things made to be used. I want each piece to invite touch—to feel solid, durable, and as considered in the hand as it is to the eye. It should be beautiful without feeling delicate or too precious to use.

mission statement

"I don’t believe art has to sit untouched on a pedestal. I make one-of-one functional objects meant to be held and used, working with hardwoods and reclaimed materials in a way that keeps their grain, marks, and history visible. That is what Imperfect Sophistication means to me: creating something refined without erasing the character of the material."
