SADIE STEWART

Sadie Stewart is a ceramic artist studying at The Alberta University of the Arts heading into her final year. She grew up in Fernie, British Columbia being inspired and influenced by the world around her. This has been clear in her artistic practice through techniques and surfaces. Sadie was introduced to ceramics at a young age and views it as being part of who she is. She is continuing her studies over the summer apprenticing at Fogo Clay Studio in Newfoundland.
"I make pottery so people can hold and use art in their daily life. An object to make passive habits intentional and considered. This comes through in diverse surface and comfortable forms. The surface is inspired by small moments in nature, where textures and colours interact. I take a flat slap, cut it, and bend it to create my desired three-dimensional forms. This process allows for textural exploration in which I create a dimpled surface that emulates footprints in sand, and ripples on water, through the use of my finger print. I address the surface decoration in an intuitive manner. I am creating work across different clay bodies and firing temperatures which pushes me to explore the possibilities of the material and create a unified but diverse body of work".
