Wonderstruck is an exhibition about that split-second feeling of delighted disbelief — when something stops you in your tracks and the world suddenly seems bigger, stranger and more beautiful than you expected.

An exhibiton of work that captures surprise, joy, and the magic hiding inside everyday things. Disciplines include fabric art, sculpture, pottery, glasswork and painting.

Includes works from Zuzanna Rhia, Topo Pots, Sam Sedlowsky, and more

To be a potter you have to follow the ancient rituals of the art form. The centring of clay, the patience of the kiln, the slow transformation of earth into object — these are gestures that have been repeated for thousands of years, unchanged in their essentials.

And yet walk into any contemporary ceramics studio and you might find a teapot shaped like a cloud, a vase that appears to be melting, a bowl that is winking at you.

Something has happened to ceramics. It has kept all of its seriousness — the discipline, the skill, the deep respect for material — while discovering an irrepressible sense of humour and play. The ritual remains. The whimsy has arrived and shows no sign of leaving.

Ritual & Whimsy celebrates this moment in contemporary ceramics — the ancient practice and the modern imagination, the meditative making and the mischievous result.
