Quick and Easy Ideas to Freshen Up a Room

There are a few simple tricks used by Interior Designers to inject new life into a room and give it a personalized touch, from small items to larger features. We might not have all the pieces at h squared but you are likely to discover something that will complete the idea you are striving for.

Refresh - Keep yourself and your guests refreshed by adding a pitcher of water with glasses in a common living space. Dougherty Glassworks is a Canadian glass blower who is well known for his tundra glasses and carafes with thumb divots. The glasses from this series fit effortless over the carafe to keep the water fresh.

Not ready to commit to painting your walls? Bring colour into your room with cushions. Check out some of Tara's go to places to for fun, colourful pillows, all made in Canada - of course!

Natural Elements - flowers or plants in an interesting vase or unexpected vessel creates a moment of calm in a room. Pitchers, cruets, cups, vessels of all kinds are created by our Canadian makers and any of them can be used to display a gorgeous arrangement of flowers or greenery. Browse our Canadian potters.

Lighting - The right lighting for a room can make or break the feeling you are trying to create. A blast of potlights for a cozy living room after dinner is not going to cut it, just as a flourescent tube over the kitchen island won't lure people over to chat as you are whipping up dinner.

Canadian Art - While we don't believe you need to design a room around a piece of art, we have been known to support our collectors in their desire to move when they find a piece they can't live without. A painting can transform a room bringing tranquility or energy and everything in between. At h squared we have a collection of almost 300 paintings and wall hangings from 16 different arists, with new works arriving monthly. Browse through our artists.

Mixed Mediums - Balance in a room can often be found when there's a variety of textures, tones, and patterns that compliment each other.

Layer your room in the same way you layer up to go for a walk in the winter. Bring softness with couches, chairs, throw pillows, and throw. Add definition with sculptures, bookcases and  sidetables. Find small pieces such as bud vases and small ceramic vessels to ground the coffee table. Let the art on your walls tell the story of your travels

If you want to make a change or can't quite get a room to feel finished by yourself take advantage of Tara's interior design savviness and hire her for a consult. The initial consult is complimentary which makes it a great oppurtunity to pick her brain, in person, and to discover whether you would be a great fit for one another.
